“Seeing the Algorithm” is a research project that explores one of the key challenges of AI: how algorithms impact kids and teens on social media.

Through interviews, visual analysis, and critical reflection, we examined these interactions in relation to human rights and ancestral/Indigenous wisdom, reimagining what ethical, care-centered technologies could look like for younger generations.

This project was developed in collaboration with my master’s colleague, Jenny (Jennifer Simonds-Spellmann) over the course of three months (November 2024 – February 2025), as part of our Master’s in Design for Responsible AI at Elisava, Barcelona.

Next Steps

Jenny and I are currently in conversation about evolving Seeing the Algorithm into a community-based art initiative. With the proper permissions and ethical considerations, our goal is to bring this project into schools and other youth-centered spaces. We hope to explore how children of different ages understand, imagine, and interact with their algorithms, using creative, participatory methods to surface their lived experiences and expand the conversation around ethical AI from an early age.
